Mechanical Engineering : Mother branch of Engineering

Mechanical Engineering : Mother branch of Engineering

  • Introduction:

Mechanical engineering is branch of engineering in which that applies the principles of physics, mathematics and materials science for design, develop, study, creating and maintenance of mechanical systems. Mechanical engineering involves the Production and usage of heat and mechanical power for the design, production, and operation of machines and tools.

In other words Mechanical Engineering is a that branch of Engineering that concern with machines and mechanisms. It is one of the oldest and broadest engineering disciplines and also known as MOTHER branch of all engineering.

Mechanical engineering is mostly depends on three factors i.e. the Force, Energy and the Motion.

  • Mother Branch of Engineering:

Mechanical Engineering is referred as the “Mother Branch of Engineering”, It is the oldest and broadest engineering discipline, and definitely the most flexible. Mechanical engineering links to all branches of engineering and having great contributions to every field.

It gives the launching platform for every field of engineering such as automobile, manufacturing, aerospace, power generation, biomedical and genetic engineering, chemical engineering etc.

All the branches of engineering depend on Mechanical engineering so it is the Mother Branch of Engineering. It is evergreen branch of Engineering.

  • What Mechanical Engineers Do?

Mechanical Engineers Design and Develop everything, from Aero plans to Bicycles. Mechanical Engineers specializes in the field of manufacturing, production, automotive, robotics, Air conditioning etc. Mechanical Engineers work in automotive, chemical, computer, aerospace, communication, manufacturing industries, paper and power generation industries. Also mechanical engineers work in environmental and biomedical fields.

In normal work day mechanical engineers do personnel functions like supervision of employees, technicians, technologists, or other engineers.

Now the duties of Mechanical Engineers are:-

       1)      Design or redesign Mechanical and Thermal system or subsystem using analysis and CAD.
       2)      Design, develop and test prototypes of products they design.
       3)      After examine the test results and change the design or system as we needed.
       4)      Supervise the manufacturing processes.
       5)      To check the equipment failure and find the faulty operations or processes.

Fields of Mechanical Engineering:-
·       Robotics
·       Mechatronics
·       Thermodynamics
·       Manufacturing
·       Nanotechnology
·       Material science

  • Robotics :-

Robotics is the branch of Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science Engineering and Electrical Engineering that concern with the design, study, manufacture, operation and application of robots as well as computer for their system control and information processing.

Robots are used to perform that functions which are dangerous or dirty for humans to perform. Robotics Engineers use computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) system for designing of robots. Robotics Engineers design robotic system and research method to manufacture them economically.

Advantages of Robots:-
1) Perform all function with speed and accuracy.
2) Robots are work at any time without food and salary.
3) Robots can work in unsafe environment.
4) Robots can do multiple tasks at same time.
5) No need to any experience.
  • Mechatronics:

The word Mechatronics is the combination of two words Mecha and Tronics, Mecha from Mechanical and Tronics means Electronics.

Mechatronics = Mechanical + Electronics

Mechatronics is a branch of engineering that focuses on the engineering of  both electrical and mechanical systems and also the combination of mechanical, electronics, computer, telecommunication and product engineering. It is a computer controlled electromechanical systems.

Advantages of Mechatronics:-
1) More efficient.
2) Flexible design.
3) More reliable.
4) Lower cost.
5) User friendly.
6) Small size.

  • Thermodynamics:-

Thermodynamics is the branch that concern with heat and temperature, and there relation to energy and work. In thermodynamics, we can study Internal energy, Entropy and Pressure. The term thermodynamics is the relation of heat to forces acting between adjacent parts of bodies, and the relation of heat to electrical agency.

Applications of Thermodynamics:-
1)      Refrigeration System.
2)      Air-conditioning system.
3)      Turbine, Compressor and Pumps.
4)      Power-Plants.
5)      Automobile engines.

  • Manufacturing:-

Manufacturing is a part of Mechanical Engineering. It includes research and develop tools, processes and machines, and integrate the facilities and arrangement of producing quality products with optimum use of capital.
In simple words, Manufacturing is a conversion of raw material into finished product or final product. The main focus of Manufacturing or production engineer is to convert raw material into updated or new product in most effectively, efficiently and economically.

Advantages of Manufacturing:-
1)      Increase in Quality.
2)      Reduction in Cost.
3)      Reduction in overall Production time.
4)      Decrease in human error.

  • Nanotechnology:-

Nano means Extremely Small. It deals with the sizes range from 1-100 nm. Nano technology is a study of manipulation of matter on Molecular and Atomic Scale. Generally it concerns with structure size between ranges from 1-100 nano meter in at least one dimension, and developing materials, devices within that size.

Advantages of Nanotechnology:-
1)      Carbon Nano tubes.
2)      Nano Medicine.
3)      Nano Computers.
4)      Information Technology.
5)      Nano Robots.
6)      Solar Cells.

  • Material Science:-

Material Science is the design and development of new materials, properties and application of materials such as Metals, Polymers and Composites. It includes elements of applied physics, science and chemistry, and as well as the Mechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering and the Civil Engineering.

In Material Science, the scientist discovers new materials and exporting their properties.

Advantages of Material Science:-
1)      Develop a New Material.
2)      Evaluate the properties of Material.

Reasons why Mechanical Engineering is Best among other Engineering Fields:-

1)      Mother of all Engineering fields.
2)      Evergreen field.
3)      Vast Industry.
4)      Everything is Mechanical.
5)      More Interesting.
6)      Best Job offers.
7)      Social Status.
8)      Best Life Style.
